Wardrobe Refresh Workshop

Join Veolia for a FREE Wardrobe Refresh Workshop at your local recycling centre this spring!

It’s the perfect time for a spring clean but rather than throwing away old clothes why not refresh, improve or mend them for the new season. As part of an upcycling awareness project, Veolia the recycling and waste partner of Southwark council are giving residents the opportunity to attend a free repair workshop at the recycling facility off Old Kent Road, at the Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility, 43 Devon Street, London. SE15 1AL

Katie from Stitches In Time who will be leading the workshop said; “This will be a relaxed workshop where residents can get advice on how to fix, alter and repair clothes they might have been too afraid to tackle! Come along to the workshop with at least three to five items that you’d like advice on how to fix and you will be guided in choosing the best ones to work on and supported in fixing them.”

For residents keen to attend all equipment is provided and attendees will learn:

  • A range of sewing and alteration techniques
  • Technical jargon used in dress making
  • How to repair and alter on your own with confidence

The free ‘Spring clean your wardrobe’ workshop takes place on Tuesday 4 April, it will start promptly at 10am and will end at 1.30pm. Residents interested in attending must book their place by emailing southwarkenquiries@veolia.co.uk by 30 March 2017.

As part of the workshop visitors will also be given the opportunity to see first-hand what happens to their recycling at the state of the art recycling facility. The tour of the recycling facility will enable residents to learn where Southwark’s 132,500 tons of recycling gets sorted every year, ready to become something new.

Other crafting workshops will be taking place later in the year as part of this upcycling project.

PLANES OVER SE5 AND MORE WIDELY over South Southwark: TOO EARLY, TOO LATE, TOO NOISY, TOO LOW – TOO MANY

Get involved – before the Night Flight Consultation Results are buried

‘Take action over flights and send your comments to jrsresidents@gmail.com; please your full name and post code for the message to be forwarded to your MP’.

We are 20 miles from Heathrow but there are already noise impacts on residents long before the proposed 3rd runway is built. Please write to your MP and emphasise the increased plane activity in recent months, using bigger aircraft, flying lower, flying more noisily, using new flight paths, with aircraft arriving more noticeably from 4.30am and continuing until 11.30pm.

Ask him or her to bring a debate in Parliament to

·  ensure residents achieve at least 7 hours sleep, the minimum recommended by WHO (World Health Organisation) for good health, and ban flights between 11pm – 6am.

·  ensure any remaining night routes avoid populated areas to mitigate the impact of aircraft noise

·  keep aircraft higher for longer by utilising Continuous Descent Approaches which reduce noise because they require less engine thrust

·  stop aircraft concentrating over SE5

·  stop the impact on mental and physical health caused by aircraft noise and aircraft pollution flying low over SE5

·  take the whine out of arriving aircraft

It is important he or she knows how aircraft arriving in to Heathrow impact on residents in London SE5 and more widely across Southwark, 20 miles from Heathrow. Even before the proposed 3rd runway is implemented.

YOUR VIEWS ON BEING A SOUTHWARK – survey

Your views on being a part of your local community

The Southwark CAN website is coming up to a year old! We have told stories, shared events and met you in your communities to talk about how you can make change together.

We were just wondering… CAN you spare 5 minutes to share your views on community life in Southwark – think of it as a Birthday present to your CAN community!

The survey will take no more than a few minutes of your time (we promise!) but will give you an opportunity to tell us about how you get involved in your community, or not, and your views on the CANs.

We CAN repay the favour in helping support another year of community activity with all of the excellent activists and community groups in your local area 🙂

If you want more information, want help getting involved in your community or have any questions about Community Action Networks contact: engage@communitysouthwark.org or give us a call on 020 7358 7020.

Thank you – you wonderful Southwarker!

Planning appeals

Planning appeals

Inspectorate Called in over DHFC Stadium Plans on Protected Green Space
Southwark Council have still not made a decision over the controversial planning application to build flats on the current stadium of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club and build a new stadium on nearby protected green space, Green Dale. The property developers have now called in the Planning Inspectorate to appeal over this tardy non-decision, as well as the council’s decision to not allow changes to the Section 106 agreements that protect the current stadium from uses other than leisure and recreation.

The Green Dale Fields have seen off previous planning applications, mainly due to the fact that they are protected as Metropolitan Open Land (MOL). This is the highest level of protection land can have in London, and is on a par with  Green Belt.

The plans would see a 4000 capacity stadium built mainly on the current astro turf pitch, which is also MOL. Due to the large size of the pitch though, 2267m2 of grassland would also need to be swallowed up, plus a copse of shrubs and mature trees where hedgehogs have been found. The stadium also requires a high wall to ensure no-one can view the game from outside. This wall would cut off views across the fields and contradicts the London Plan which states that MOL should be protected  from “development having an adverse impact on the openness of MOL”.
Vocal Hamlet fans will argue that this development is the only way to secure the future of the club, yet we heard all of the same arguments in 2002 when a similar application was made and rejected by the Planning Inspectorate.  No-one wants to see the club go under, but building on a rare piece of green space is not the answer.

Whatever your views, you have until the 7th March to make them known to the Planning Inspectorate via their website:

https://acp.planninginspectorate.gov.uk/ViewCase.aspx?Caseid=3164823&CoID=0
