Key-Holder/ Office Administrator – Draper Hall, Draper Estate, London SE1

Draper Hall is a community Hall situated in the heart of Elephant and Castle, London SE1. It is run by the Draper Residents Association (DRA), a Tenants and Residents Association on the Draper estate.

Draper Hall is very busy 7 days a week, serving its local residents and the wider neighbourhood. The opening times of the Hall are between 9am and 9:30pm everyday.

A committee of volunteers runs Draper Hall but the position of Key-Holder/Office Administrator is a paid position and is being offered on a part-time, contract basis.

Salary: £15 per session, which includes opening and closing the Hall.

Deadline for applications: 11.59pm, 22nd May, 2017, interviews to take place 30th and 31st May.

Job Description for Key-Holder/ Office Administrator – Draper Hall

The Key-Holder is a very important representative of the DRA, as the ‘face’ that the customer meets first and it is of great importance that the Key-Holder has customer-care experience and presents him/herself as clean and smartly dressed with a polite and diplomatic manner.

The DRA Executive committee will provide support on the specific requirements for the role and the KH will report directly to them.

The successful candidate should live within a 3 mile radius of Draper Hall and be ready to promptly attend during the course of a hire to deal with any unforeseen problems e.g. the fire alarm going off, noise complaints from neighbours, loss of power, etc.

The Key-Holder will report primarily to the Chair of the DRA and will be in charge of scheduling the calendar of Draper Hall. They will meet with prospective hirers and inform them of the rules of the Hall.

The Key-Holder will be available to work on weekends and to open and close the Hall half an hour prior to the opening time 9am (at 8.30am) and half an hour after the closing time of 9:30pm (till 10pm).

Essential:

– needs to be internet proficient in order to deal with scheduling the calendar online and corresponding via email with both the DRA executives and the clients hiring the Hall.

– will be responsible to ensure that the Hall has been left clean and ready for the next hire and if the hire has failed to do so report the hire to the DRA committee.

– be prepared to do some basic cleaning and organising of the Hall in case this has not been done and the cleaner is not due to arrive within the day.

Availability:

– needs to be available on the phone (mobile phone provided) and online, via email to the DRA Executive committee and clients hiring the Hall, The KH will be responsible for dealing with some possibly difficult clients and challenging situations, so it is necessary that the person is diplomatic, used to mediating and finding the appropriate solution.

Additional Hours:

If available to work for additional hours, we would also like the Key-Holder to cover some administrative work a couple of hours a week in the Draper Office; filing bills/receipts and organising Hall hire contracts.

If the candidate is First Aid trained and aware of Health and Safety procedures, this would be a bonus.

A steering group of interested representatives of the Voluntary and Community Sector has been holding discussions with the local authority to determine the future support needs of the voluntary sector in the borough.

As part of the discussions, a consultation of all voluntary and community organisations operating in the borough has been commissioned. The consultation is aimed at eliciting information on the support needs of voluntary and community organisations so as to be able to form a view on:

– Building relationships, networks and trust between VCS organisations
– Helping VCS organisations to be resilient, especially considering public sector funding reductions
– Leveraging funding and resources into the borough
– Ensuring the VCS has a voice and can represent their communities in strategic partnerships

This will allow us to support existing, as well as 40 new volunteers, deliver another year of training, and create six brand new walks for the local community, celebrating South London’s diverse cultural heritage!

Hear Bowie’s Brixton, relive Charlie Chaplin’s childhood, march with the Suffragettes and for Black Rights, see the beautification of Southwark, or take a moonlit Thameside stroll! CoolWalks are a range of weekly walks in South London, which have been running for over ten years, offering locals and visitors an alternative to the usual tourist walk. These off-the-beaten-track tours present the area’s diversity, culture and heritage. They are researched and delivered by CoolTan Arts volunteers.


The CoolWalks volunteer training programme supports members of the public to research, plan and deliver the walks, improving their wellbeing and employability; last year 30% of volunteers progressed to paid employment. It is run at CoolTan Arts, an award-winning mental health in arts charity. CoolWalks is open to all but especially supports those with mental health conditions. Your support will enable CoolWalks to become a self-sustaining social enterprise for the South London community.

Why it’s a great idea:

CoolTan Arts provide much of its support to people in South and Inner London – an area which has one of the highest incidences of mental distress in the UK. We widen access to creative opportunities and make sure that arts and leisure are available to everyone, regardless of circumstance. CoolWalks is based on the charity’s ethos of improving mental wellbeing through creativity. Guides are encouraged to craft the stories they feel are important, based on their research and training.

Last year we worked with over 30 volunteers, and created seven new local walks. All money raised will enable CoolTan Arts to continue their vital work supporting people with mental distress to develop their potential, reconnect with their aspirations, recover and enjoy life!

Anyone living under a flight path will tell you one thing: it’s plane hell. For residents of Camberwell and other parts of South London it’s fast becoming a nightmare. 

The Plane Hell Campaign was born in response to local residents noticing an increase in the number of planes flying over a particular area of Camberwell, almost without a break, and starting as early as 4.30am.

The main issue for Southwark is noise from overflying aircraft on approach to land at Heathrow and London City Airports.

The key thing to remember when collecting signatures is that we can only use originals, no photocopies are permissible, and only sheets with ‘the petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Government to re-open Camberwell Station, London’ at the top of the page, to prove that the signatories knew what they were signing. Full home addresses must be collected with each name.

Once you have collected signatures you can drop off the petition at SE5 Forum’s market stall (every Saturday at Camberwell Green between 10am-2pm) or drop it into Cambridge House, 1 Addington Square, SE5 0HF (FAO Robert Jamieson).


Camberwell SE5 is an area of London that is badly served for public transport. When TfL consulted in 2014 about extending the Bakerloo line through Camberwell, a big majority of responses favoured this option, but the tube route went elsewhere.  

• The lack of access is holding back our local economy and businesses.

• Compared to other major hospitals in London, getting to Kings College Hospital and the Maudsley, is challenging for staff, patients and families

• One of our principal routes to and from Central London is the Walworth Rd, which is so congested with traffic that people who can walk find it faster than taking the bus.

Priority Action for Camberwell (PACT) is a grass roots community organisation campaigning for better transport. Join us in calling on the Secretary of State for Transport, to provide public and practical support for the Camberwell Station project, working with the London Borough of Southwark and other stakeholders.

Why is this important?
Southwark Council is destroying the woods and graves of the Camberwell Old and New Cemeteries to make Super Cemeteries.

This is the largest grave mounding and excavation project in UK history. Southwark Council is destroying 12 acres of woodland, mounding over tens of thousands of public graves then excavating every grave over 75 years old for ‘new’ inner city burial.

These woods are the lungs of London.
These graves are our history and our heritage.

We the undersigned want the Camberwell Cemeteries saved and declared Local Nature Reserves, as Nunhead, Highgate, and Tower Hamlets Cemeteries now are, with the graves and monuments protected with respect for the dead, and woods for the living.

We love Ruskin Park. We want it to be a haven of relaxation, exercise and health for the whole community. Could you help mobilise local people to support us?

The Friends of Ruskin Park are looking for an enthusiastic and capable freelancer to work with us for approximately 40 days over the next six months. Their main tasks will be:

●  Manage the launch of a new, more coordinated volunteering programme
●  Facilitate new activities and volunteering opportunities
●  Help us increase the profile of our activities
●  Support the Trustees and other key volunteers with other elements of our work where appropriate, including making sure that we are prepared to continue this work after the end of the project without your help.

About us

The Friends of Ruskin Park is a registered charity (number 1166358) led by a group of trustees who are all local people. We work to ensure our park is well cared for and maintained, and has a planned and healthy future. 2016 was a significant year for the Friends. We saved the park’s popular paddling pool from closure, raising money through a crowdfunding appeal and put in place a team of volunteers to help maintain it. We also continued with many other highly successful activities, including our summer fete and bandstand concerts. These activities are supported by a group of regular volunteers.

We are committed to our vision for Ruskin Park as a health and wellbeing park . This will include building better links with the nearby Maudsley and King’s College hospitals. Critically, we need to develop a broader approach to volunteer recruitment and engagement that allows us to draw on local enthusiasm to support the park, while better co-ordinating the skills of our existing trustees and volunteers.

The role

The opportunity is for an agreement to supply services, not an employment contract. We expect the rate to be between £120 and £170 per day depending on skills and experience. You will be paid within 30 days on presentation of an invoice and agreed timesheets. We are not registered for VAT.

The Development Worker will:

1.Manage the launch of a new, more coordinated volunteering programme for Ruskin Park

●  Build and grow a simple volunteer database, signposting and supporting potential volunteers to get involved
●  Promote membership and volunteering, including a significant ‘volunteer drive’ at the Ruskin Park Summer Fete on Saturday 24th June 2017
●  Work with existing projects such as the Paddling Pool, Bandstand Concerts and Summer Fete to ensure they have sufficient volunteers for their activities

2.Facilitate new activities and volunteering opportunities that support our vision for a health and wellbeing park
●  Set up joint volunteering sessions with partners such as Trees for Cities and the Ruskin Park Community Garden
●  Building other relationships, e.g. with local schools, hospitals, community groups and other membership organisations, particularly to create opportunities for groups such as hospital patients and young people

3.Help us increase the profile of our activities through publicity materials, attendance at community events (including our own events) and social media

4.Support the Trustees and other key volunteers with other elements of our work where appropriate, including to make sure we are prepared to continue this work after the end of the project without your help.

Who are we looking for?

You will need to be:

●  Passionate about parks, and with a keen interest in health, community activities, food growing and/or horticulture
●  Experienced in working with, supporting and inspiring volunteers. This will include developing a good relationship with our trustees and project group leaders who all have busy lives
●  Able to work with a range of organisations, build networks, spot and exploit new opportunities
●  Well organised and focused on getting things done
●  Able to work independently and flexibly. We’re a small organisation, with no paid employees. Your work schedule will need to accommodate some evening and weekend activities
●  Able to set up simple and efficient processes (e.g. for registering volunteers) and train other people to use them
●  Computer literate (Office, WordPress, Mailchimp) and great at managing social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
Optional : As some of our volunteering sessions will require some ‘hands on’
facilitation, we would also like to hear about any practical experience and knowledge you have related to horticulture, food growing, community gardening or other park based activities . However, we are flexible on this requirement and can bring in additional expertise as required.

Zero waste kitchen challenge

What could you change with £100?

We’re all passionate about the food we eat, yet each year in the UK we throw away 15 million tonnes of food and drink. Nearly half of this is perfectly good to eat. This amounts to around £60 per week per household.

In 2016 Sainsbury’s launched Waste less Save more in order to help households to reduce their food waste and save on their food bills while meeting new people and learning new skills along the way.

This year Sainsbury’s are looking for 40 Camberwell households to take part in The Zero Waste Kitchen Challenge to build upon last year’s work. Households would ideally live on the Dog Kennel Hill Estate or around Bromar Road, Grove Hill Road, Malfort Road or Ivanhoe Road. Participating households will receive £50 of Sainsbury’s vouchers and £50 to spend on products that help reduce food waste. The Zero Waste Kitchen Challenge will run from April to July 2017. Participants will receive a food waste home consultation, invites to free cookery sessions and a Zero Waste Kitchen Handbook to assist in the selection of products. The products are designed to help with planning, storage and cooking. There will also be events and on-line support such as a Facebook group.

About waste less save more

Waste less Save more is part of a new partnership between Sainsbury’s, Southwark Council and environmental charity, Hubbub, which will help local residents to reduce their food waste and save on their food bills while meeting new people and learning new skills along the way.

Sainsbury’s customers have told us that wasting food is one of the biggest things on their mind and they hate doing it. Quite rightly, they see food waste as money going in the bin, and they’ve said they’d like help in this area. In response we created our Waste less, Save more programme, a five year plan designed to test, learn and share the best solutions for helping households reduce their food waste. https://wastelesssavemore. sainsburys.co.uk 

In 2016 we partnered with Swadlincote in Derbyshire to try out lots of projects and innovations to find the best ways households can reduce their food waste and save money. We’ve since delivered over 20 projects in the town which have helped to reduce household food waste, save money for families and strengthen local bonds. Southwark Council are now keen for us to bring some of the learning to Camberwell.
