Did you know you can now pick up free copies of the 2024 edition of Travel Guide to Camberwell, as well as our new Camberwell business maps: Eat Around the World Map and Health & Wellbeing Map? Come and pick up copies at our Saturday market stall. Or you can download them for free here on our Camberwell.life website (along with the Black History Walk and Community Cookbook).

The Eat Around the World Map was created alongside the first food festival on Camberwell Green in May, launched by the Camberwell Green market, Urban Farmer’s Market, and supported by SE5 Forum. Both maps were created by SE5 Forum as part of a Love Local campaign, supported by Southwark Council’s Thriving High Streets Fund. The maps will be presented on 1st October at King’s College Hospital, and will be made available for use to all staff and visitors, which will help drive trade to local businesses.

Last week, we were also delighted to donate free maps and guides to the 1500 new students at Camberwell College of Arts (UAL) and Kings College London (KCL) as part of their welcome week.

As part of our ongoing Love Local campaign, we’re also offering local businesses two free marketing workshops on 14 October with top experts – businesses based in SE5 can choose to attend either or both free workshops on Social Media Marketing and Kerb Appeal. For any businesses interested, please find out more and register here. 

Camberwell Food Walk: back by popular demand!
Join us on Saturday 12 October for a new Camberwell Food Walk tour of some of the most exciting food destinations in Camberwell. Sample signature dishes, meet the unique, creative people behind some of the neighbourhood’s top places, and learn more about the cuisines that have made Camberwell their home. The Camberwell Feel Good Festival returns for Summer 2024 with two Saturday festival events, packed full of fun and engaging health and wellbeing activities, free food and music, and vital support services for all ages. After the fantastic success of last year’s Feel Good Festival, which attracted more than 1000 visitors, SE5 Forum invites everyone to this summer’s festival of wellness, community connection and joy. 

The festival brings together local charities and organisations, arts and health professionals, food banks and pantries, and volunteers, to support the health and wellbeing of the local community and create a free, uplifting event.

In our latest series of fascinating talks by talented locals, journalist and filmmaker Michael Holland screens his documentary Clubland and leads us into the fascinating Camberwell club, which drew in royalty, top footballers, British acting legends and even a sprinkle of Hollywood, set up by the Rev. Jimmy Butterworth.

Clubland background: Founded in the 1920s by Rev. Jimmy Butterworth, Clubland was not just any youth club—it was a place where celebrities like Bob Hope and the Queen visited.From 1922 to 1976, Reverend Jimmy Butterworth transformed the lives of many young people in South London through his Methodist youth club, Clubland. Catering to boys and girls aged 10-18, Clubland became the UK’s leading youth club. It featured impressive amenities like a theatre, gymnasium, and library. These facilities reflected Butterworth’s commitment to providing the best for all members, regardless of background. His own tough beginnings inspired his dedication to helping disadvantaged youth, establishing Clubland as a beacon of hope and development in South London.

Michael Holland, a journalist and filmmaker, has captured the spirit of Clubland through interviews and rare footage. Look out for more mulberry adventures coming soon from our Trees & Green Spaces group, a joint initiative by SE5 Forum and The Camberwell Society.   Local businesses at risk from council rent increase Five small essential independent businesses in Crossthwaite Avenue, SE5 – a post office, launderette, pharmacy, hairdresser and supermarket – are under threat of closing down as a result of Southwark Council’s threatened rent increase of 143%. This is despite attempts at negotiation and communication with the council.  A petition has now been set up to protect these small essential shops, which form a neighbourhood hub for the local area, including five large council estates. If you’d like to support them, click here to go to the petition.     Southwark Maternity Commission Share your experience of maternity care Southwark Council is running a Maternity Consultation to find about the standards of maternity care during pregnancy and the first few months after birth and make recommendations about how services can better meet resident’s needs. MONDAY 4 MARCH, 7pm: BOLIVIA: AN INDIGENOUS STORY – a heartrending but joyful talk of protest and activism, and a celebration of Bolivan culture with mother and daughter Miriam Amancay Colque and Yandire.

They will share their love of their native country, discussing the culture, history, food and political struggle of the indigenous people. Miriam will also tell her moving story of protest against dictatorship as a student and her time in a Bolivian concentration camp.

MONDAY 8 APRIL 7PM: STITCHING IN BLACK IDENTITY: Textile artist Celia Johnson on using fabrics, quilting and embroidery to reflect on and celebrate Black identity. SOUTHWARK WANT YOUR VIEWS ON PLANTING A TINY FOREST IN BURGESS PARK
Would you like to see a tiny forest planted in Burgess Park? Our Trees & Green Spaces Group (with Camberwell Society) is working with Southwark Council to propose a new tiny forest as part of the council’s tree planting projects to address the climate emergency.

Southwark Council says: “We are proposing the creation of a Tiny Forest in Burgess Park as a means to address rising temperatures, storing carbon, creating habitats and increasing valuable green spaces which can be used by the community.”

They’re keen to hear from people who live and or work in the wards of Camberwell Green, Faraday, North Walworth, Old Kent Road, Peckham, and St Giles. And anyone else who has an interest in Burgess Park. Closing date: 21 February 2024.

Join this guided walk celebrating Camberwell’s black historical figures to mark the official launch of the Camberwell Black History Walk.

The walk, penned by local historian Stephen Bourne, with designs by artist Tayo Fatunla (photo), explores black history through 8 historical and contemporary figures in Camberwell: from 17th century John Primero to Star Wars actor John Boyega. A WWI soldier to fireman and British Empire Medallist, from the Windrush to Southwark Mayor, a black feminist broadcaster on the BBC in the 1940’s and a man sometimes described as the Martin Luther King of Britain.

The Black History Walk will be launched at 11am on Saturday 3 February by Southwark Mayor Michael Situ and Theatre Peckham’s artistic director and CE Suzann Mclean on Camberwell Green.

At 12pm, the guided tour will start at the main Black History walk plaque in the centre of Camberwell Green park.

MONDAY 5 FEBRUARY 7PM: END OF LIFE MATTERS.

Join Camberwell local Ann Kenrick for a unique talk about planning for the ‘inevitable’ – our or others’ end of life. It sounds morbid but the talk is more life-affirming than you might think. Ann encourages us to reflect upon and talk about our approach to end of life in a positive and constructive way. And to get organised!

Ann is founder of End of Life Matters, which supports people of all ages to consider and put together their end of life plans. Having dealt with the challenges of her own parents’ death, Ann says: “Few people give birth or organise a wedding without meticulous planning but most of us are totally unprepared for this most vital of times at the end of all our lives… and as a result, this can have a drastic impact on grieving family and friends.”

Ann helps people look at care considerations, how to ensure their voices are heard and their wishes followed even if they lose capacity, and to think about their legacy and funeral wishes.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions and gain a thorough understanding of how easy it is to get started with planning to give you peace of mind and leave your friends and family without the chaos that Ann had to deal with when her mother died suddenly.

Ann Kenrick has lived in Camberwell for over 30 years, after an unusual upbringing from Calcutta to school on the Isle of Iona. Ann received a Southwark Civic Award for her work encouraging children to walk and cycle to school as Chair of London Cycling Campaign and was also first female Master of the Charterhouse, an historic seven-acre almshouse in central London.

In this fascinating and heartfelt talk, Miriam Amancay Colque and her daughter Yandire will share their love of their native country Bolivia. They will discuss the culture, history, food and political struggles of the indigenous people, as well as Miriam’s younger years as a student activist including time in a Bolivian concentration camp.
