Join this guided walk celebrating Camberwell’s black historical figures to mark the official launch of the Camberwell Black History Walk.
The walk, penned by local historian Stephen Bourne, with designs by artist Tayo Fatunla (photo), explores black history through 8 historical and contemporary figures in Camberwell: from 17th century John Primero to Star Wars actor John Boyega. A WWI soldier to fireman and British Empire Medallist, from the Windrush to Southwark Mayor, a black feminist broadcaster on the BBC in the 1940’s and a man sometimes described as the Martin Luther King of Britain.
The Black History Walk will be launched at 11am on Saturday 3 February by Southwark Mayor Michael Situ and Theatre Peckham’s artistic director and CE Suzann Mclean on Camberwell Green.
At 12pm, the guided tour will start at the main Black History walk plaque in the centre of Camberwell Green park.

We will walk to each of the eight stops, where there’s a plaque that describes each important person featured in Camberwell’s black history, as well as a QR code for an auditory guide voiced by young actors from Theatre Peckham.
