Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy – String Quartet No. 6 in F minor, Op. 80

Beethoven’s final string quartet, No.16 in F major, Op.135, is a strangely disjointed work. Its last movement contains the motif Es muss sein (“It must be”), which represents the composer’s confrontation with mortality, having written the quartet at the end of his life.

Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn) was Felix Mendelssohn’s eldest sister and although talented composer herself, she was only able to publish one collection of songs during her lifetime, and indeed published some earlier works under her brother’s name. Of her String Quartet in E flat major (1834), Diether de la Motte remarked, “never in music before Liszt and Wagner have I found such creative questioning of classical harmony.“ The third movement, Romanze, contains some of the work’s most innovative harmony.

Felix Mendelssohn’s dramatic String Quartet No.6 in F minor was written in 1847, shortly after the death of his sister Fanny Hensel. The String Quartet No. 6 in F minor, Op. 80, was written in 1847 in response to the death of his sister, and bears the inscription “Requiem for Fanny”. It was the last major work he composed before his own death in November 1847.
