Leaf It to Nature: A Walk with Camberwell’s Medicinal Trees
As part of Urban Tree Festival, this free walk invites you to explore tree heritage in a gentle, engaging way, right in the heart of Camberwell.
When: Saturday May 9th
Time: 2:00pm – 3:30 pm
Location: Myatts Fields Park SE5 9RA
You might think of medicinal plants as small herbs, but many tree species have also been used in traditional medicine. Myatt’s Fields Park is home to a wonderful variety of trees, many of which are connected to traditional healing practices.
Camberwell itself has long been associated with medicine – from its historic health giving wells to its modern role as a centre for healthcare – and this event continues that tradition by reconnecting us with the green spaces and trees of SE5. During the walk, we will introduce a selection of local trees and share how different cultures have used them for wellbeing and everyday remedies. The walk itself is the only “prescription”: all information is offered purely for interest and curiosity, not for medical use.
Our guide on the day is Greg Packman – one of London’s leading arboriculturists and a prominent public educator on trees and urban treescapes. In 2025, he was appointed the first-ever Treescape Curator for The Royal Parks, a role created to shape climate-resilient, biodiverse landscapes across London’s eight historic parks. Alongside his professional work, Greg leads popular community tree walks and talks through Greg Talks Trees, sharing his deep knowledge of tree ecology, folklore, and urban tree management with audiences across London.
This is a chance to slow down, meet neighbours, and enjoy the trees with fresh eyes. We finish with a simple, calming lime-leaf tea, served in the park, giving everyone a moment to pause and chat. Whether you come for nature, history, or a restorative break, you’ll be warmly welcomed.
Space is limited, so booking is essential
