NETWORK RAIL PLANS TO TRANSFORM CAMBERWELL ARCHES INTO CAFES

NETWORK RAIL PLANS TO TRANSFORM CAMBERWELL ARCHES INTO CAFES

Plans to transform industrialised railway arches into new spaces for cafes and bars have been drawn up by Network Rail.

A planning application submitted to Southwark Council last month shows the six archways could soon offer Camberwell a new hot spot for evening entertainment.

The six archways in 344-349 Camberwell Station Road “currently in a poor state of repair”, according to Network Rail. But each contain about 120 square metres, with a six smaller one providing 50 sq m of space.

Public consultation on the plans ends today (Thursday), and will soon be decided be either approved or sent back to redesigning by Southwark Council’s planning committee.

We need your input – Quietway 8 Kennington Park to Burgess Park

Quietway 8 Kennington Park to Burgess Park

https://consultations. southwark.gov.uk/environment- leisure/qw8

Overview

A new safe, quiet route between Kennington Park and Burgess Park is coming to make it easier and safer to get around on foot or by cycle. This route is for everyone – and is particularly good if you’re travelling with children or if you want a quiet route to get to the shops, school or work. With your input and support our engineers and safety specialists will be able to design this route to be quieter, away from heavy and fast moving traffic and polluted air. Help us get it right.

This new walking and cycling route was developed due to concerns about road safety and is designed to create a better link between Kennington Park and Burgess Park for cyclists and walkers. As most of the route is part of other schemes, right now we just need your local knowledge to make sure that the part of the route between Kennington Park and Addington Square – shown below – works for you and to know whether there is anything we have missed. We are trying to make as little disruption as possible focusing on clear signage, better surfacing, new paths for walking and cycling including some changes to parking spaces.

Why We Are Consulting

https://consultations. southwark.gov.uk/environment- leisure/qw8/

Quietways are a network of cycle routes in London that run through streets with low traffic volumes. Linking key destinations, the vast majority of Quietways follow back streets with some on paths across parks and open spaces. The routes are for new less-confident cyclists who want to avoid busy roads. Quietways form an integral part of the Council’s Cycling Strategy and the Mayor of London’s vision for cycling. We want to increase cycling and walking as a preferred way of getting around locally.

Many of their instruments need replacing in the near future so this is a great opportunity to help contribute to their replacement, and lots of small gifts soon mount up! If you haven’t come across them do look them up (www.camberwellchoirschool.org.uk). They’ve been around for 26 years and have worked with 3,000 local children from 0-17 helping them build confidence and self-worth through music. One of their current children is on stage in the West End production of Lion King, and another, who was a child in the mid 1990’s, recently sang in the White House for the President!

If you’d like to make a donation please go to localgiving.org/ccs and click on ‘donate now’ for a one off gift or ‘give monthly’ to give three monthly payments that will all be match funded.

SOUTHWARK FIREWORKS NIGHT 2016

Southwark Council is delighted to announce that its annual free fireworks extravaganza, now in its 13th year, will be back once again on Saturday 5 November at Southwark Park.

The event, named by visitlondon.com as one of the best displays in the capital, is one of the few free displays taking place in London on the night itself.

Anyone planning to attend the fireworks event in Southwark Park should ensure they get their free tickets in advance, and be aware that local routes to the park will be very busy on the night. Travel should be planned in advance to make sure they arrive at the park in good time.

Gates will open at 5pm, with food, drink, children’s funfair and entertainment available till 8.30pm.

Last entry to the park will be at 6.30pm so please arrive in good time.
